US President Donald Trump and the leaders of the European Union (EU) have appointed United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio to head a group of NATO advisers and officials to develop security guarantees for Ukraine. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported this on August 18, citing European sources.

"Trump and European leaders have agreed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead a task force of national security advisers and NATO representatives to develop security guarantees for Ukraine," the publication said.

According to the newspaper, Ukraine's security guarantees will include a military presence, air defense, weapons and control over the cessation of hostilities from other countries.

Earlier in the day, Rubio announced US plans to work on security guarantees for Ukraine. According to the US Secretary of State, such guarantees should be created after the conclusion of a possible peace agreement.

Zelensky and US President Donald Trump met at the White House on August 18. The closed-door talks lasted about 30 minutes. After that, Zelensky and Trump met with the leaders of the European Union countries.

During the talks, Trump said that Russia was not against Ukraine receiving security guarantees.
