On August 18, US President Donald Trump announced that he would sign a decree abolishing postal voting before the midterm congressional elections in 2026.

"I'm going to lead a movement to get rid of mail-in ballots. <... The falsification of ballots by mail using voting machines, which is a complete disaster, must stop immediately," he wrote on his page on the Truth Social social network.

The president said that his Republican Party would "fight with all its might to return the integrity of the elections." The head of the White House noted that work on this will begin from the moment the decree is signed.

On March 25, Trump's decree was published on the White House website, obliging American voters to confirm their citizenship when registering to vote in the presidential election. It was noted that this would increase the rate of fair elections in the country. In addition, the document prohibited the states from counting ballots received by commission staff after election day by mail.
