The European Union (EU) increased the purchase of Russian pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) by 9% in the first half of 2025. This was reported on August 18 by TASS with reference to data from the statistical service of the European Union (Eurostat).

The data analysis shows that in the first six months of this year, the EU spent €2.9 billion on Russian pipeline gas and €4.5 billion on LNG. In total, the European Union purchased about €7.4 billion worth of gas from Russia in the first half of the year, which is 9.4% more than in the same period of 2024.

In June, the EU spent €520 million on Russian gas, which was the lowest in a year. France (€182 million), Belgium (€147 million) and Spain (€109 million) were among the main importers. The Netherlands reduced the purchase of LNG from Russia to €82 million. Pipeline gas exports from Russia to the European Union in June are estimated at €360 million.

The share of Russian LNG in the total imports of liquefied natural gas by the EU countries in June was 13.7%. The first place is occupied by the USA with a share of 54.3%.

On June 25, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree extending until October 1 this year the permission for foreigners to pay for Russian gas in rubles not only at Gazprombank, but also at other banks. The amendments were made to the decree "On the special procedure for the fulfillment by foreign buyers of obligations to Russian natural gas suppliers" dated March 2022.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on June 27 that the EU intends to continue the initiative to abandon the import of Russian energy resources by 2028. He clarified that Hungary and Slovakia oppose the decision against the background of a likely increase in gas transit costs from other countries.
