- Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation Polyansky urged to take into account the opinion of Ukrainians who resettled in Russia
On August 16, Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations (UN), called for taking into account the opinion of Ukrainians who fled to Russia after the start of the special military operation (SVO) when discussing a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.
"It is necessary to take into account the opinion of about seven million Ukrainians who found refuge in Russia after the outbreak of the conflict. They also have a position.: they want to be recognized as Russian—speaking," he said in an interview for the BBC.
Polyansky emphasized that it was their own choice, which requires respect in the negotiation process to end the conflict in Ukraine.
On August 18, US President Donald Trump will hold a meeting in Washington with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to discuss a peace treaty with Russia. Then the negotiations will continue in an expanded format with the participation of the heads of European states. They will be attended by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
