- The media learned about the possible arrival of the Finnish president at the meeting between Trump and Zelensky
Finnish President Alexander Stubb may, at the insistence of European leaders, arrive in Washington for a meeting between American leader Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on August 16, citing two European diplomats and a source close to the issue.
"It is planned to send <...> Finnish President Alexander Stubb, along with Zelensky, when he arrives in Washington on Monday," the newspaper quoted the interlocutors as saying.
According to people familiar with the matter, Stubb can prevent possible conflict situations between the American and Ukrainian leaders, as well as "include Europe" in the future negotiation process to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
One of the sources said that besides Stubb, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte may also go to Washington.
On August 15, Fox News learned that after the conclusion of the Russian-American summit, Trump called Zelensky and the leaders of the European Union (EU). Later, on August 16, The Washington Post (WP) learned that the conversation had been tense.
On August 16, Michaela Kufner, editor-in-chief of the politics department of the German newspaper Deutsche Welle (DW is recognized as a foreign agent and an undesirable organization in the Russian Federation), indicated that European leaders were not invited to the upcoming meeting between Zelensky and Trump on August 18. She clarified that Zelensky was allowed to take European partners with him, but it is not known what exactly was meant by this wording.
