The WSJ learned about Trump's willingness to provide Ukraine with security guarantees
US President Donald Trump told European leaders that Washington is ready to provide "security guarantees" for Ukraine, which it requests. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) wrote about this on August 16, citing sources.
It is noted that the possible participation of the United States in concluding an agreement to end the conflict was not discussed during telephone talks with the leaders of the European Union (EU).
"The White House administration has not made public statements about security guarantees [for Ukraine] since Trump's arrival in Alaska on Friday," the article says.
In turn, the EU leaders, after a conversation with the head of the United States, said they welcomed the president's words about his intention to provide these guarantees. Bloomberg added that Trump indicated that Russia would not be against security guarantees for Ukraine, as they could be provided not through NATO.
Earlier on August 16, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, in a telephone conversation with Trump, once again asked the United States and European countries to provide security guarantees for Kiev. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk indicated that European leaders had prepared a joint statement following a conversation with Zelensky, during which the results of the Russia-US summit in Alaska were discussed. It notes the EU's willingness to work with Trump and the leader of Ukraine towards a trilateral summit.
The meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the American leader took place on August 15 at the American military base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, and lasted 2 hours and 45 minutes. During the press conference, the Russian president noted the American leader's desire to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
