European leaders do not have their own strategy for ending the conflict in Ukraine, and this has become their fundamental problem, which was exposed by the summit between the presidents of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, held in Alaska. This was reported on August 16 by The New York Times (NYT).

"The outcome of the short meeting in Alaska, as well as the upcoming further negotiations, reveal a fundamental problem for the Europeans. They do not have their own strategy for ending the conflict, let alone defeating Moscow," the article says.

According to the newspaper, Brussels is now trying to restore its own defense, while the leaders of the European Union (EU) are not sure of Trump's commitment to NATO and collective security.

"The Europeans are aware of Trump's unpredictability, his lack of sympathy for Europe and Ukraine," said Michael K. Kimmidge, a professor of history at the Catholic University of the United States.

Earlier in the day, the leaders of European countries expressed their support to the US President for his efforts to resolve the Ukrainian conflict and achieve peace. The EU leaders also indicated their willingness to work with Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky towards a trilateral summit.

The meeting between Putin and Trump took place on August 15 at the American military base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage. At a press conference following the meeting, Putin noted the American leader's desire to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. In turn, Trump said that the negotiations went very well, and called the summit in Alaska wonderful.
