Russian Foreign Ministry: protests in Serbia turn to violent scenario
The peaceful protests that are taking place in Serbia are increasingly turning towards a violent scenario. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced this on August 15.
"The transition from peaceful demonstrations to a violent scenario is unfolding, despite the fact that the country's leadership takes the current situation and existing problems seriously," the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.
As stated in the publication, "certain forces in Serbia," speaking under the slogans of "seeking justice and democracy," do not hide their aggression. The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that due to the protests in the country, public order, as well as the safety and lives of citizens, are at risk.
In addition, the ministry added that Russia will not be able to remain indifferent to what is happening on the territory of Serbia. The Foreign Ministry also expressed confidence that Belgrade will cope with the protests and restore peace.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on August 14 that protesters in Serbia had vandalized the office of the Serbian Progressive Party (SPP) during rallies. In addition, he added that the state will definitely do its job and suppress the protests. Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said on August 15 that at least 42 police officers had been injured as a result of the protests, 26 of them in Belgrade.
Anti-government protests began after 15 people died in the collapse of the railway station in Novi Sad in November 2024. The protesters blocked bridges and roads.
