The doctor told about diseases with pupils of different sizes
A condition in which the pupils differ in size is called anisocoria. As a rule, this is not an independent disease, but a symptom of other ophthalmological, neurological or somatic disorders. Anna Solovey, an ophthalmologist at the 3Z clinic, told Izvestia about this on August 15.
Physiological anisocoria occurs in about 20% of people and is considered a variant of the norm — the difference in pupil size does not exceed 1 mm. However, if the difference is more significant, it may be a pathological form caused by eye diseases, brain lesions (neurosyphilis, encephalitis, tumors) or Horner's syndrome, which often develops after a stroke.
According to the doctor, mechanical anisocoria occurs due to injuries to the iris, surgical interventions or inflammatory processes. A separate pharmacological form is a temporary change in pupil size due to the action of medications.
"Even a slight difference in pupil size can cause visual discomfort. An eye with an enlarged pupil receives an excess of light, and with a narrowed pupil it receives a lack, which is especially noticeable at dusk," explains Solovey.
According to the ophthalmologist, people suffering from anisocoria often tend to reduce the strain on the affected eye due to discomfort. As a result, false ptosis (habitual closing of the eyelid of an unused eye) and progressive visual impairment in this eye may develop.
"The treatment strategy for anisocoria depends on its cause and is determined by a specialist based on the results of a comprehensive vision diagnosis, medical history collection and a number of studies. The general approach is to eliminate the root cause, whether it's Horner's syndrome, an inflammatory process in the eye or brain, or something else," the doctor noted.
Timely and well-prescribed treatment provides the best chance of a favorable outcome and preservation of vision, she concluded.
On August 8, ophthalmologist Anton Kazantsev listed the rules for maintaining vision under digital stress. According to him, it is worth following the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes of working behind the screen, look for 20 seconds at an object at a distance of at least 20 m.
