Vladislav Zhemchugov, internist, immunologist, MD, specialist in especially dangerous infections, said that meningococcal infection is most often caused by people who are members of organized groups.

In conversation with aif.ru On Wednesday, August 13, he noted that the carrier of the infection is able to remain a source of infection not only for several weeks, but also for months. According to him, people who are close to such a person can become infected and become seriously ill.

Prolonged contact with a carrier is necessary for infection. Such a person may cough, and others risk becoming infected. Schoolchildren in classrooms, students in classrooms and dormitories in rooms with insufficient ventilation are at risk.

One of the symptoms of the disease may be a severe headache.

On August 12, Rospotrebnadzor reported that the situation with meningococcal infection had stabilized in the Russian Federation: in a week, doctors registered only two cases of the disease. Most cases had previously been identified among migrant workers, but thanks to vaccination and other measures, the outbreaks were quickly eliminated, preventing the spread of infection in Russia, writes RT.

Rospotrebnadzor noted that outbreaks of the disease occur approximately once every 10-30 years, while individual cases in children and adults are registered every year, according to NSN. The ministry recalled that the best protection against the disease is vaccination, as well as hygiene and avoiding contact with patients, the Moscow City News agency reports. According to infectious diseases specialists, about 1,200 cases of infection have been registered this year. This figure is twice as high as the data for the same period in 2024, RIAMO clarifies.

Also on August 12, infectious disease specialist Vladimir Chulanov called the meningococcal situation in Russia stable. According to Chulanov, the epidemic process of infection is characterized by cyclical rises in morbidity, alternating with declines, the website writes kp.ru .

At the same time, an infectious disease specialist, Doctor of medical Sciences Mikhail Favorov noted that vaccination against meningococcal infection should be included in the national vaccination calendar, writes IA Regnum.
