Moscow is interested in preserving the Svalbard archipelago and the entire Arctic as a low-tension zone, Russian Ambassador to Norway Nikolai Korchunov said in an interview with Izvestia.

"Russia, in turn, is interested in building constructive cooperation with Norway in Svalbard in accordance with the provisions of the 1920 Treaty, developing a dialogue to resolve practical issues of our economic and scientific activities, and preserving the archipelago, as well as the entire Arctic, as a low—tension zone," the diplomat told Izvestia.

Earlier it became known that Norway is creating obstacles to Russia's scientific activities in Svalbard, seeking to strengthen its sovereignty over the Arctic archipelago.
