The Pentagon plans to create a "rapid reaction force" based on the National Guard, which will have to respond to internal unrest in the country. This was reported on August 12 by The Washington Post (WP), citing internal Pentagon documents.

"The administration of [US President Donald] Trump is considering plans to create a "Rapid Response Force to internal civil unrest," consisting of hundreds of National Guard troops tasked with rapid deployment to American cities facing protests," the material says.

According to the documents studied by the newspaper, the plan provides for the permanent presence of 600 military personnel "on alert", who could be deployed "in just an hour." They will be divided into two groups of 300 people and stationed at military bases in Alabama and Arizona. It is noted that the military will control the regions east and west of the Mississippi River.

According to forecasts outlined in the document, this mission may require hundreds of millions of dollars if military aircraft are also on standby around the clock.

"This proposal, which has not been previously reported, represents another potential expansion of President Donald Trump's willingness to use armed forces on American territory," the publication clarifies.

According to the newspaper, the plan that the American administration is studying involves the transfer of troops from one state to another, while most units of the National Guard have rapid reaction groups for use within their states.

On August 5, Trump proposed taking Washington under federal control to combat the growing crime rate. He noted that many criminals are confident of their impunity due to their young age.

In this regard, the US president proposed changing the law and prosecuting juvenile offenders as adults, sending them to prison "for long periods" starting at the age of 14. Trump also noted that Washington will soon turn from the most dangerous city into the safest.

Later, on August 11, Trump announced that the Washington police were coming under the direct control of the federal government. In addition, the American leader announced that the National Guard is being deployed to the city to restore law and order and public safety.
