Putin and Trump's meeting in Alaska — forecasts and comments. What is known
Moscow and Washington are continuing preparations for a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump scheduled for August 15. Read about the details of the upcoming summit and the reaction of the world community to it in the Izvestia article.
Trump on the upcoming meeting with Putin in Alaska
During a press conference on crime and landscaping in Washington, Trump said he was looking forward to a constructive dialogue with Putin. He noted that the upcoming summit in Alaska is necessary in order to clarify the position of the Russian leader on the settlement in Ukraine. The US president added that before meeting with Putin, he intends to ask him to end the Ukrainian conflict.
Trump also said that he has good relations with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, but he does not approve of his actions. In particular, the American leader criticized the words of his Ukrainian counterpart that he needed "constitutional approval" for the exchange of territories with the Russian Federation.
"I was a little worried about the fact that Zelensky was saying, 'Well, I need to get constitutional approval.' That is, he has approval to start a <conflict> and kill everyone, but not yet approval to exchange territories," Trump protested.
He also added that more than 80% of Ukrainians support the conclusion of a peace agreement with the Russian Federation.
How are they preparing for the meeting between Putin and Trump in Europe
According to Bloomberg, on Wednesday, July 13, European leaders will hold a telephone conversation with Zelensky and Trump. It is noted that the event will be attended by US Vice President Jay Dee Vance, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, the prime Ministers of Great Britain, Italy, Poland and Finland.
According to German Chancellor Stefan Cornelius' spokesman, the talks will "consider further options for exerting pressure on Russia," as well as "preparing possible peace talks and related issues of territorial claims and security."
At the same time, the chairman of the Bundestag's defense committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, said that Europe does not have sufficient military power, so neither Moscow nor Washington take it seriously.
"Europe simply does not have military power, and therefore, obviously, is not taken seriously by either Russia or Trump. And we have to take this very seriously. Without this force, which, of course, is based on economic strength, we will not be taken seriously," the politician said.
Expectations from the meeting between Putin and Trump in Alaska in Russia and Europe
According to Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the State Duma's International Affairs committee, the meeting between Putin and Trump in Alaska could be historic, including for Russian-American relations.
"Most constructive politicians in the world hope for this, with the exception of the fascist elite at Bankova. At the same time, it is useless to put pressure on our country or use the language of ultimatums," the deputy said in an interview with Gazeta.Ru».
Slutsky also noted that the Ukrainian authorities and the "anti-Russian lobby" in the EU do not want an end to the conflict in Ukraine, as this will destroy many political careers based on Russophobia. At the same time, he added, Trump has repeatedly made it clear that Kiev's support is not a priority for his administration, and without the participation of the United States, Europe does not have the resources to support the Ukrainian regime.
The head of the French political party Patriots, Florian Philippot, pointed out in his social networks that the meeting between Putin and Trump had ruined all Zelensky's plans. In his opinion, after the announcement of the upcoming summit in Alaska, Ukraine and its European allies found themselves at an impasse.
"The announcement of a meeting between Trump and Putin <...> in Alaska had the effect of an exploding bomb. Since then [French President Emmanuel] Macron and Zelensky are rushing in all directions," he wrote on his page on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
Former Slovak MP Petr Marcek, in a conversation with Izvestia, expressed the opinion that Ukraine would not play a special role in a peaceful settlement, since an agreement on ending the conflict should be reached between the presidents of Russia and the United States.
"Zelensky is just a formality. He is a puppet in the hands of the European Union and the United States of America, so, in fact, he is not needed there. What matters is what President Trump and President Putin agree on," he said.
The politician added that the American leader should understand that the Russian Federation will never agree to Ukraine's accession to NATO, and will also monitor the observance of the rights of Russian citizens on Ukrainian territories.
