The expert named the reasons for blocking the steering column in cars

One of the main reasons for the steering wheel lock is the activation of the anti—theft system. This problem often causes a tow truck to be called, but the reason often lies on the surface. Konstantin Yershov, a technologist at the international FIT SERVICE network, told Izvestia about this on August 12.

"On modern cars, the steering column is locked with a special pin when the ignition is turned off — this is part of the anti-theft system. And here, as one modern classic said, there is a nuance: in order for the steering wheel to unlock, the key or button must "identify" the owner. The battery in the key is dead — hello, the steering wheel is standing. The contact in the immobilizer was lost — the same story," he explained.

Mechanical failures also remain an urgent cause. Wear on bearings, gears, or shafts, as well as micro-damage after impacts (for example, in an accident or hitting a curb) can eventually lead to jamming of the steering mechanism. A particular danger is caused by malfunctions of the electric power steering system, which, in case of errors in the control unit, can block the turn "for safety reasons."

The attackers speculate on insurance and fines for traffic violations.

The expert notes that in rare cases, the steering wheel is blocked due to failures in the stabilization systems (ESP, ABS), especially on models without a direct mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the rack. The problem may also be related to the gearbox — on some cars, the steering wheel does not unlock until the gearbox selector is set to P.

Yershov stressed the importance of regular maintenance, especially for vehicles older than five years. Dirt, water, and natural wear of parts degrade the steering mechanism over time.

The specialist recommends not trying to turn the locked steering wheel by force, but immediately contact the service with the necessary diagnostic equipment. As a preventive measure, it advises to change the battery in the key in a timely manner, monitor the condition of the transmission and do not ignore the "check" signals on the dashboard.
