Carpal tunnel syndrome (CVD) is a disease that is increasingly common among active smartphone users. This condition develops when the median nerve is compressed in the narrow canal of the wrist, which causes numbness, pain and weakness in the hand. Alexander Shelepov, a traumatologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), told Izvestia about this on August 12.

The main symptoms are night pain, tingling in the fingers (especially the thumb, index finger and middle finger), decreased sensitivity and accuracy of movements. In advanced cases, atrophy of the thumb muscles may develop. According to the expert, modern people spend 3-6 hours a day on smartphones, which creates ideal conditions for the development of the SZK.

"Prolonged flexion of the wrist while typing narrows the channel, increasing pressure on the nerve. Monotonous movements and vibration of the screen cause swelling of the tendons, and the absence of breaks leads to chronic inflammation," explains Shelepov.

The doctor notes that young people in their 20s and 40s are increasingly experiencing this condition, which has been informally called "smartphone syndrome" or "text tunnel."

Other risk factors include occupational activity with repetitive hand movements, wrist injuries, hormonal changes, and some chronic diseases. For prevention, the specialist recommends following ergonomics: hold the phone at eye level, take breaks according to the 20-20-20 rule, perform exercises for the hands and use voice input.

"At the first symptoms, it is important to consult a doctor immediately. In the early stages, SPC responds well to conservative treatment. In advanced cases, surgery may be required, followed by rehabilitation for up to 12 weeks," the traumatologist warns.

The specialist emphasizes that the health of the brushes is important not only for the use of gadgets, but also for daily activities, so it is worth paying attention to any alarm signals of the body.

Earlier, on April 19, Svetlana Semenova, Head of the Department of Modern Wellness Technologies and Adaptive Physical Education at the State University of Education, spoke about the dangers of the habit of slouching. According to the expert, prolonged retention of a slouched posture can lead to the development of kyphosis of the thoracic spine, and then your constant companions will be back pain spreading to the arm and neck due to muscle strain and deformation of the vertebral discs.
