An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 occurred in the western part of Turkey. This was announced on August 10 by the Office for the Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters (AFAD) of the republic.

The seismic event was registered at 19:53 local time (coincides with Moscow time). The epicenter of the tremors was in Balikesir province at a depth of 11 km.

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), the maximum force of the tremors was 6.0 points. TRT Haber TV channel clarified that the earthquake was felt for about 20-30 seconds in at least 10 districts in the west of the country. Now some of them have problems with mobile communication.

Information about casualties and destruction has not yet been received, said Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

"The earthquake was felt in Istanbul and the surrounding provinces. At the moment, there are no negative consequences. We are monitoring the situation in real time," he wrote on his page on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

The seismic event was recorded 860 km northeast of the city of Port Moresby with a population of about 283 thousand. On the same day, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake was recorded in the south-west of the Japanese Ryukyu Islands.
