Rutte called for de facto recognition of Russian-controlled territories
In the negotiations on Ukraine, it is necessary to recognize the actual control of the territories by Russia, but not to consolidate this from a legal point of view. This was announced on Sunday, August 10, by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
"We have to admit that at the moment Russia controls part of the territory of Ukraine," Rutte said in an interview with ABC News.
Rutte indicated that the question would be how to move forward after the ceasefire, including security guarantees for Ukraine. He stressed that legal recognition of the loss of territories by Kiev is not required and that recognition of Russian control should be only factual, not political.
On August 8, US President Donald Trump announced a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15. The US president noted that details about the upcoming negotiations will be published later. Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region. There are prospects for joint projects in Alaska.
The leader of the United States also expressed confidence in the possibility of signing a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in the coming months. Commenting on this issue, Trump stated the need for territorial concessions from both sides.
