Japan, continuing to talk about the ownership of the Kuril Islands by the Russian Federation, refuses to recognize the results of the post-war settlement. This was announced on August 10 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"Today, this country is the only one on the planet that refuses to fully recognize the results of the post—war settlement, seeking to whitewash or silence the numerous crimes committed by the Japanese military as part of the barbaric expansionist campaign in East Asia in the first half of the twentieth century," she said in a statement posted on the ministry's website.

Zakharova called the statements of the Japanese Foreign Ministry categorically unacceptable. According to her, they sound especially cynical on the eve of the 80th anniversary of the Victory over militaristic Japan and the end of World War II, which is celebrated on September 3.

The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry called such rhetoric unacceptable for a statesman and stressed that it is not capable of changing the reality that the Kuril Islands are part of the Russian Federation after the transition to the USSR legally under the post-war agreements of the Allied Powers and the UN Charter.

Zakharova also called on Tokyo to fully realize its responsibility for the aggression in 1930-1940 and apologize for the suffering caused to the peoples of Asia.

Earlier, on August 4, the Russian Foreign Ministry protested to the German Embassy in Moscow against the statements of the German Ambassador to Japan, Petra Sigmund, about the Southern Kuril Islands. The ministry called her statements a blatant encroachment on the territorial integrity of Russia.

Prior to that, on January 24, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced a difficult state in relations between Moscow and Tokyo, but the island state still supports the idea of resolving the "territorial issue" and concluding a peace treaty.
