After the upcoming talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Alaska, significant changes in Russian-American relations may occur. Political analyst Vladimir Shapovalov told Izvestia about this on August 10.

"We are talking about a possible turnaround in relations between the two largest nuclear powers in the world, and a positive resolution of conflict situations..."it may <...> mark a period of transition to <...> a more peaceful version of the rivalry between the United States and Russia," the political scientist said.

Shapovalov added that one should not count on an alliance between these two countries. According to the expert, the importance of negotiations should also not be overestimated, since Trump does not have enough power to impose his views on world politics on the EU and NATO countries, and resistance to the decisions that the Russian and American leaders will come to is possible.

Despite some risks and concerns, the political scientist pointed out the importance of choosing the location of the summit between Russia and the United States. It highlights not only Alaska's historical roots, but also the historical allied relations between the world powers. Alaska's remoteness from other European countries and the importance of the Asia-Pacific destination for the two countries are emphasized.

Earlier in the day, political scientist Alexander Asafov commented on the choice of Alaska as a meeting place for Putin and Trump. The expert noted that the meeting of the two leaders in Alaska could become a point of restoration of relations between the countries.

On August 8, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. The US president noted that details about the upcoming negotiations will be published later. Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region. There are prospects for joint projects in Alaska.

The leader of the United States also expressed confidence in the possibility of signing a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in the coming months. Commenting on this issue, Trump stated the need for territorial concessions from both sides.
