A zoo in the German city of Leipzig has euthanized three Amur tiger cubs because their mother refused to raise them. This was reported on August 9 by the Bild newspaper with reference to the zoo's press service.

They said that the Amur tigress Yushka, who became a mother for the first time, took care of the children in the first hours after giving birth, but as soon as they wanted to eat and reached for milk, she refused to feed them. Zoo Director Joerg Junhold noted that such a case is very sad, and in the animal kingdom it is typical for the behavior of inexperienced mothers. The tigress did not pay attention to the brood for almost two days, which caused the babies to become very weak.

"We gave Yushka time to gain as much experience as possible, but today we had to put the offspring to sleep," the publication quotes him as saying.

Zoo veterinarian Andreas Bernhard noted that if the cubs are not active, the mother's incentives to produce milk disappear. In this regard, the specialists had to "take on heavy responsibility and save the cubs from suffering due to starvation."

The Amur tiger is one of the rarest predators on the planet, which is listed in the International Red Book.

The management of the Nuremberg Zoo confirmed on July 29 that they had to kill 12 baboons due to the excess number of individuals. The aviary was designed for only 25 individuals. Previously, the zoo was closed for "technical reasons." This prompted animal rights activists to take appropriate measures by staging a demonstration in front of him. Activists were sure that the zoo had closed due to the intention to hide from the public the fact of killing animals.
