London police have arrested more than 200 protesters in support of Palestine.
More than 200 protesters were arrested by UK police during rallies organized by the Defend Our Juries community after a ban on demonstrations in support of Palestine came into force in July. This was announced on Saturday, August 9, according to The Telegraph newspaper.
On Saturday, demonstrators in London again took part in a rally against military operations in Palestine in Parliament Square. As a result, law enforcement officers detained 50 of its participants.
"Supporters of the organization called the ban a "gross abuse of power" that tries to prevent expressing support for the cause of the Palestinians," the media writes.
According to media reports, the police began making arrests in the afternoon, surrounding an activist holding a placard with the inscription: "I am against genocide, I support Palestinian actions." The action was organized by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which is recognized as a terrorist organization in the UK.
On the same day, Bloomberg, citing a statement from the United Kingdom's Foreign Ministry, reported that the British government had announced additional humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip amid Israel's plans to expand the offensive. It is noted that the British Foreign Office has allocated an additional £8.5 million ($11.4 million) to the UN fund established to supply food and water to the Palestinians.
British Prime Minister Cyrus Stamer announced on July 29 that Britain would recognize the statehood of Palestine in September ahead of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He stressed that recognition of Palestine will happen if the Israeli government "does not reach a cease-fire" and "does not commit to a long-term peace process."
