The Russian Foreign Ministry recalled Russia's key role in the Armenian-Azerbaijani normalization

The current stage of normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia started with the direct assistance of Russia and the signing of the trilateral declaration in 2020. This was announced on Saturday, August 9, by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"It is appropriate to recall that the current stage of the Armenian-Azerbaijani normalization started with the direct assistance and central role of Russia with the adoption of the trilateral summit statement of November 9, 2020 on the cessation of fire and all hostilities in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone," Zakharova is quoted as saying on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that Russia supports efforts to achieve regional security and normalize relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. She added that the meeting of the leaders of the South Caucasian republics in Washington deserves a positive assessment, despite the fact that until recently Baku and Yerevan preferred to conduct a dialogue without external assistance.

She stressed that the best way to solve the problems of the South Caucasus is to find solutions developed by the countries of the region themselves with the support of neighbors — Russia, Iran and Turkey.

Zakharova also added that it is important to take into account the factor of Armenia's membership in the EAEU and the fact that Armenia's border with Iran is guarded by Russian border guards.

On August 8, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a declaration on the peaceful settlement of the conflict. During the meeting in Washington, they agreed to end the confrontation and resume diplomatic relations.

Later, Pashinyan said that Armenia and Azerbaijan established peace by signing documents in Washington. He called the incident a historic event.
