An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred off the coast of the northern Kuril Islands. This was announced on August 8 by Elena Semenova, head of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station.
It is specified that seismologists registered it three hours after the first earthquake of magnitude 4.8.
"An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred in the Pacific Ocean on August 8 at 15:43 (7:43 Moscow time. — Ed.)," Semenova told RIA Novosti.
According to her, the epicenter of the seismic event was located 123 km from the east of the city of Severo-Kurilsk on Paramushir Island. The source was located at a depth of 53 km. Semenova also added that a tremor of up to 3 points could be felt in Severo-Kurilsk. No tsunami alert was issued.
Earlier, on August 3, 10 significant earthquakes were recorded in Kamchatka, and more than 65 earthquakes occurred in just one day. On August 4, the situation repeated itself: seven significant earthquakes occurred during the day.
