An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 occurred in Papua New Guinea. This was announced on August 7 on the website of the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).
The earthquake occurred 860 km northeast of the city of Port Moresby with a population of about 283 thousand.
It is specified that the epicenter of the seismic event lay at a depth of 19 km.
On the same day, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake was recorded in the south-west of the Japanese Ryukyu Islands. It was noted that the natural phenomenon was also felt in Taipei, Taiwan. The most intense tremors were recorded in Yilan, Hualien, Nantou, Taichung and Taitung.
