Muscovites can watch the rain of shooting stars
Residents of Moscow can already observe one of the most powerful meteor showers — the Perseids. This was announced on Wednesday, August 6, by Evgenia Kravchenko, a senior researcher at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.
In an interview with the Moscow City News agency, she noted that the peak of activity is expected from August 9 to 15, and the maximum is expected on the nights of August 12-13 and August 13-14. At this time, you can see up to 100 meteors per hour with the naked eye.
The Perseids are visible all over the sky, but it is better to look to the south — there the meteors will be the brightest and longest. A particularly impressive sight can be observed far from the glare of the city, writes RT.
Kravchenko clarified that meteors burn up in the atmosphere at a speed of about 60 km/s. For better visibility of weak meteors, she recommended using a red flashlight.
In addition, on the night of August 13, the planet Saturn will be visible next to the Moon, and closer to morning, the approach of Venus and Jupiter. However, bright moonlight can interfere with observations — the disk will be illuminated by 85%. Even without the Perseids, up to five single meteors can be seen every night.
