The doctor named the causes of emotional instability after eating
Some people notice that their emotional state changes after eating: irritability, anxiety, or sudden mood swings appear. This is often attributed to fatigue or stress, but one possible cause may be a basic deficiency of key nutrients such as vitamin B6 and magnesium. Ekaterina Demyanovskaya, an expert doctor at the Hemotest Laboratory, told Izvestia on August 7 exactly how these substances are involved in metabolism and regulation of nervous activity.
Vitamin B6 is necessary for the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin, and magnesium regulates the nervous system, reducing the excitability of neurons. Deficiency of these substances can also manifest itself in the form of muscle contractions, insomnia and other symptoms.
"After eating, the body activates metabolic processes, and if the reserves of B6 and magnesium are depleted, their shortage becomes especially noticeable at this moment. For example, vitamin B6 is needed to convert tryptophan (the amino acid of good mood) into serotonin. If this vitamin is low, the synthesis of the "hormone of happiness" is disrupted, which can cause emotional instability — unreasonable sadness, irritability, apathy," the doctor explained.
In addition to nutritional deficiencies, Demyanovskaya added, mood can be affected by sudden changes in blood glucose, food intolerance and an imbalance of the intestinal microbiota. To replenish B6, it is recommended to include beef liver, fish, bananas and nuts in the diet, while magnesium is found in seeds, nuts and dark chocolate.
"The optimal approach that will prevent a shortage is a balanced diet with sufficient amounts of proteins, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates," the doctor concludes.
According to her, it is important to combine magnesium-containing foods with sources of vitamin D and calcium. Emotional instability after eating may indicate more serious health problems, so if there is no improvement, you should consult a doctor. Replenishing vitamin and mineral deficiencies can significantly improve mood and overall well-being.
Pediatrician, nutritionist, and SOLGAR expert Maria Kulikova told Izvestia on August 6 what the potential risks are with the complete elimination of fats. According to her, they are one of the key macronutrients along with carbohydrates and proteins. In addition, fats perform many vital functions. For example, energy — fats are a concentrated source of energy, providing 9 calories per gram.
