Hydrogen fuel cells can become the basis for the development of spacecraft that will explore the shadow craters of the Moon, the director of an autonomous non-profit organization (ANO) told Izvestia. "Vostochnaya Hydrogen Cluster Management Company" Andrey Gorbunov.

"Hydrogen energy cells do not freeze to -250 degrees. Classic moon rovers freeze when they enter the shadow. Therefore, their route is possible only in sunlit squares. On the moon, the craters are all in shadow, and no one has explored them. Because there is no such possibility yet," Gorbunov explained.

To make an ideal power plant for robotic mobile drones, one cylinder of hydrogen and oxygen must be placed in it. It will be able to produce electricity and will operate at low temperatures, the expert said. However, there are still a number of issues that scientists have to solve. In particular, alloys or composite materials that can withstand extreme cold are needed, the specialist said.
