The Moskvarium Center for Oceanography and Marine Biology at VDNH in Moscow celebrated its 10th anniversary. Over 18 million people have visited it during this time, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on his website on Tuesday, August 5.

According to him, the idea to create an aquarium in the city arose from the image of Moscow as a port of five seas. As a result, one of the most popular pavilions of VDNH appeared, writes RT.

The volume of water in the Moskvarium reaches 25 million liters, and the collection contains more than 12,000 aquatic inhabitants and 600 species, including rare and rare species. Sharks, seahorses, sturgeon and other species are represented here. In addition to exhibitions, the center holds water shows, children's performances and exhibitions, Moscow 24 notes. They have already been visited by over 3 million viewers.

Sobyanin noted that the center actively cares for animals — thousands of individuals, including rare species, have been born here in 10 years. The center cooperates with the Russian Academy of Sciences, participates in population conservation programs and trains specialists, writes NSN.

Moskvarium also conducts internships for students and classes for schoolchildren. According to the mayor, this is a unique space combining science, education and leisure, the Moscow City News Agency notes.
