Switzerland intends to continue negotiations on duties with the United States and make a more favorable offer to conclude a deal. This was announced on August 4 in a statement on the website of the Swiss Federal Council.

"Following the announcement by the United States of an increase in duties on goods from Switzerland to 39%, the Federal Council decided on August 4, 2025, to continue negotiations with the United States <...> In order to improve the situation with duties and at the same time take into account the concerns of the United States, Switzerland is doing everything possible to present the United States with an even more attractive proposal at this new stage of negotiations," — the press release says.

It is specified that negotiations may continue after August 7— the date of entry into force of 39 percent duties. At the same time, in order to reach an agreement with Washington, the Swiss Federal Council has developed a new approach to negotiations.

The Swiss government also noted that over the past 20 years, the volume of trade with the United States has increased fourfold. Switzerland currently ranks sixth in terms of foreign investment in the United States and first in terms of investment in research and development.

Earlier in the day, American political scientist Malek Dudakov said that the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on Switzerland at 39% could have a significant impact on the country's economy. He noted that such measures would also have a negative impact on the Swiss watch market, which plays an important role in the country's economy.

On August 1, the American leader imposed additional duties on imported goods from the European Union and more than 60 foreign countries. The highest tariffs were imposed on goods from Laos, Myanmar (40% each) and Syria (41%). Also, goods from countries that have not concluded an agreement with the United States are subject to a duty of 10%.
