The eruption of several volcanoes at once is the norm for Kamchatka, but a connection can be identified between the earthquake and the awakening of Krasheninnikov Hill, which has been silent for more than 500 years. Volcanologist Sergey Samoylenko told Izvestia about this on August 4.

"He [Krasheninnikov volcano] was silent for a very long time, he did not show any signs of life. And the fact that it has now started to erupt in our country is probably really triggered by the earthquake. <...> Perhaps, without the earthquake, we would have waited for its eruption only in ten years, and maybe in another hundred," he said.

According to Samoylenko, there is not always a direct connection between earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The expert stressed that the volcano will begin to erupt only when the magma inside is mobilized and mobile.

"We can imagine a mechanism by which an earthquake triggers volcanoes, but only if the volcano is already "fueled with gasoline," "the key is turned in the ignition," and only waiting for someone to "step on the gas." If there is no "gasoline", that is, the magma is not mobilized, then shake, do not shake, nothing will work," he explained.

The expert also added that there are about 30 active volcanoes in Kamchatka, so when several of them erupt at once in one period of time, this is not considered an amazing event.

On July 30, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 8.7 occurred in the Kamchatka Territory. A tsunami threat was declared on the coast of the Avacha Bay. Emergency regimes were declared in the North Kuril region of the Sakhalin region and in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

The day before, it was reported about the first recorded eruption of the Krasheninnikov volcano in Kamchatka. It is specified that the plume spread eastward from the volcano towards the Pacific Ocean, there are no settlements in its path, and ash fallout has also not been recorded. There are no tourist groups in the area of the volcanic eruption.
