A car rally for the opening of the border with Russia was held in Lappenrantai, Finland. This was announced on August 3 by the Yle television and radio company.

The protesters drove cars from Lauritsala to the closed border checkpoint in Nujamaa. The purpose of the protest action was to peacefully demonstrate the importance of communication and its absence at the present time.

"I think the eastern border is important for many people, especially in Eastern Finland. However, people are afraid to raise this issue," said Ivan Devyatkin, a deputy of the local city council and one of the organizers.

On June 27, Yle announced that the European Parliament (EP) had closed the consideration of the petition of Russian-speaking residents of Finland to open the border with the Russian Federation. According to the document, Finland has the right to close certain points on the external border against the background of alleged "hybrid threats" from Russia.

On April 16, the Finnish government decided to keep the border with Russia closed until further notice. It was clarified that the decree on the indefinite extension of the border closure has been in effect for about a year, while the new document replaced a similar decision dated April 4, 2024.
