Chikunova spoke about the rotavirus disease at the World Aquatics Championships
Russian athlete Evgenia Chikunova became infected with rotavirus at the World Aquatics Championships two days before the final swim in the 200 m breaststroke. She announced this on August 1.
Chikunova noted that she was treated for rotavirus during the tournament, adding that she fought to the end and was pleased with her performance.
"I have rotavirus, they tried to cure it in a short time. It started the day before yesterday, I had two days, and the whole day was zero improvements," Chikunova told reporters, as quoted by TASS.
She also expressed the opinion that she could have contracted the infection through the water in the pool, stressing that this was only "her guess."
On the same day, Chikunova became the silver medalist of the World Aquatics Championships in the 200 m breaststroke. It is noted that the Russian overcame the distance in 2 minutes 19.96 seconds. The gold medal was won by American swimmer Kate Douglas with a score of 2 minutes 18.5 seconds.
