Crimea is ready to take away the monument to the Russian artist Ivan Aivazovsky, which was demolished in Karabakh, and also restore it. This was announced on August 1 by the head of the republic Sergey Aksenov.

"Ivan Konstantinovich is our countryman, he has done a lot for the Crimea. We are ready to accept the destroyed monument, restore it and install it in its rightful place," he wrote on his Telegram channel.

According to the head of the republic, the war with monuments of other states cannot be justified by any motives. Aksyonov added that it is better to give the monuments related to Russian history and culture to the Russian side than to destroy them.

On July 29, a monument to Ivan Aivazovsky was demolished in the town of Khankendi (formerly Stepanakert) in Nagorno-Karabakh on his birthday. The monument was erected in December 2021, and the decision to dismantle it was made by the authorities in 2023.

On July 31, Mikhail Shvydkoi, Special representative of the President of Russia for International Cultural cooperation, said that the demolition of the monument to Aivazovsky in Azerbaijan causes regret and deep rejection. In his opinion, such actions do not correspond to the spirit of alliance and partnership that binds countries and peoples, and also contradict common sense.
