Tsunamis can occur in the Arctic, this is one of the consequences of global warming, environmentalist, honorary polar explorer of the Russian Federation, chairman of the Council of the Yakut branch of the Russian Union of Rescuers, Nikolai Nakhodkin, told Izvestia.

According to him, the source of the threat is the vicinity of Bennett Island in the East Siberian Sea, in the vicinity of which scientists assume volcanic activity.

"In particular, plumes of smoke can be seen on satellite images. They are energetically comparable to volcanic emissions and spread over hundreds of kilometers, reaching the coasts of Canada and Alaska. Perhaps this indicates underwater volcanoes," the polar explorer explained.

At the same time, he said, Russian researchers noted a rising bottom in one of the bays of Bennett Island. It took place over the course of 9 years at several points. As a result, the bottom level changed to a height of 1 to 9 m, which also indicates the activity of the interior of the northern land.

Based on these data, Nikolai Nakhodkin added, it was concluded that underwater volcanoes could erupt in the Bennett Island area. If they occur during the period of open water, it can cause a tsunami.

As the expert noted, no one in the Arctic was preparing for such scenarios. However, they pose a threat to coastal settlements and industrial infrastructure. For example, Russian companies intend to extract hydrocarbons in this area, and Rosatom is building a small nuclear power plant in the lower reaches of the Yana River.

The polar explorer recalled that on July 30, a powerful earthquake occurred near the Kuril Islands. It caused a tsunami that flooded the coast of Paramushir. Meanwhile, there is a similar seismic situation in the vicinity of Bennett Island.
