On July 30, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova compared the statement by the head of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Moldova, Angelica Karaman, about the possibility of European Union (EU) countries to interfere in Moldova's elections with the scandal of former US President Bill Clinton and American activist Monica Lewinsky.

"I was reminded of Bill Clinton's position before the grand jury when he argued that his interference with Monica Lewinsky could not be considered external interference," Zakharova wrote on her Telegram channel.

It is known that the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke out in 1998, when her relationship with Clinton was revealed, which caused a significant public response and caused an attempt to remove her from office in Congress.

Earlier in the day, Karman said that the EU has the right to interfere in Moldova's elections, as the country seeks to join the alliance. According to her, even direct financing of political parties from the European Union is not considered corruption.
