The West appreciated Russia's launch of the world's largest cruise missile
The Russian nuclear submarine Oryol launched the world's largest cruise missile Granit during the recent July Storm naval exercises, Military Watch Magazine (MWM) noted on July 30.
On July 27, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that on the final day of large-scale maneuvers in the Northern Fleet in the Barents Sea, the Admiral Golovko frigate, the Eagle submarine and the Bastion coastal missile system fired Kalibr, Granit and Onyx cruise missiles at a group naval target.
"The submarines of the Antey project are the latest class of Russian warships equipped with Granit cruise missiles, which are about four times the size of standard cruise missiles used by modern vessels," the publication says.
As specified by "Gazeta.Ru", one submarine is capable of carrying 24 Granit cruise missiles, each weighing 7 tons. They can hit targets, including enemy aircraft carriers, at a distance of up to 500 km.
MWM adds that the Antey-class submarines are gradually being replaced by Yasen-class submarines capable of using Zircon hypersonic missiles.
On July 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the continuation of serial production of the Yasen-M project multipurpose submarines. According to the head of state, the Yasen-M cruisers form the basis of the strike potential of the general-purpose forces of the Russian Navy. He specified that four cruise missile project cruisers are under construction at the Sevmash enterprise.
