The Armenian Court of Appeal has declared the search conducted at the home of businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan illegal. This was announced on July 30 by his lawyer Lianna Gasparyan.

"The complaint against this decision was satisfied, the Criminal Court of Appeal recorded the fact of violation of Samvel Karapetyan's rights," Sputnik Armenia quoted her as saying.

According to the lawyer, the decision to arrest the businessman was made by the same judge who allowed the search of Karapetyan's house in Yerevan. The decision of the Court of Appeal, in turn, confirms that there were no grounds for conducting a search.

Karapetyan's detention became known on June 18. He was charged with calling for the seizure of power in Armenia. After that, he was arrested for two months. Armenian politician Arman Abovyan called the businessman's detention an attempt to weaken the influence of the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC), which the businessman publicly supports.

On July 14, the entrepreneur announced the creation of a new political force in Armenia. On July 28, Karapetyan's defense sent letters to the Prosecutor General and the Prosecutor's Office requesting a change in the preventive measure.
