Basketball player Kasatkin has not improved his prison conditions in France
The requests of basketball player Daniil Kasatkin, who was detained in France on suspicion of cyberbullying, to improve the conditions of detention in a local prison were not satisfied. The Russian Embassy in Paris announced this on July 30.
"Unfortunately, the requests of the Russian citizen to the prison administration, supported by the embassy, to improve the conditions of his detention have not yet been satisfied," the Telegram channel said.
It is specified that the athlete is still in the Fresnes prison in the suburbs of Paris. According to the Russian diplomatic mission, Kasatkin's prison cell lacks the necessary items for daily use. In addition, the basketball player is denied access to the prison gym.
The Russian Embassy stressed that they would send a diplomatic note to the French Foreign Ministry asking for assistance in resolving these issues. It is noted that the diplomatic mission also intends to seek the transfer of Kasatkin under house arrest.
Kasatkin's detention in France became known on July 9 at the request of the United States. The basketball player's lawyer, Frederic Belo, told Izvestia that Kasatkin is probably accused of extortion due to the use of his computer by intruders. In turn, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Paris Court of Appeal informed Izvestia on July 11 that the United States has 60 days to provide materials on the basketball player's extradition request.
On July 10, the Russian Embassy in France requested consular access to the basketball player, but it was not granted due to the position of the authorities, but on July 16, permission was nevertheless received. The basketball player himself said in court that he did not know what he was accused of and refused extradition. According to the athlete's lawyer, Kasatkin has not yet gained access to the gym, so he studies in his cell — it is forbidden to enter the sports field. He managed to get books in Russian, pens and notebooks.
