There is no serious damage in Severo-Kurilsk, Sakhalin region, as a result of the tsunami caused by the earthquake in Kamchatka. This was announced to Izvestia on July 30 by the mayor of the city, Alexander Ovsyannikov.
"There is no serious damage in the city. There is local destruction in terms of furnace risers, which is clearly noticeable, a lot is divided into apartments (local residents. — Ed.) furniture and dishes," said the mayor.
In addition, as Ovsyannikov noted, after the tsunami, which splashed about 200 m, ships were thrown onto the port territory. According to him, only industrial buildings were located on the territory of the harbor — there were no social facilities there.
On July 30, the Federal Research Center "Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences" (USGS RAS) announced a tsunami threat on the coast of Avacha Bay in Kamchatka due to a recorded earthquake. Later that day, the governor of the Sakhalin Region, Valery Limarenko, announced the evacuation of residents due to the threat of a tsunami, the first wave of which later hit the coastal zone of the region.
