Cuba's status as a BRICS partner country and an observer state at the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) provides new opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation with other members of the associations. This was announced on July 29 by the Chairman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko.

"It seems to me that both BRICS and the EAEU open up new opportunities for Cuba for more profitable, mutually beneficial economic cooperation with the member countries of these associations," she said during a meeting with Chairman of the National Assembly of People's Power and the State Council of Cuba Esteban Laso Hernandez on the sidelines of the VI World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments.

In addition, Matvienko noted that Cuba's accession to the BRICS as a partner was supported not only by Russia, but also by other member countries of the association.

The Chairman of the Federation Council also clarified that Moscow was very pleased to receive President Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermudez at the celebrations on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory. She added that the Cuban leader had very meaningful talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"I ask you to send greetings to Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, the President of Cuba, as well as to Army General Raul Castro, our long-time reliable comrade [Deputy Prime Minister of Cuba Ricardo] Cabrisas. Please send my greetings and best wishes to all your friends," Matvienko added.

Earlier, on July 2, the Cuban president received Sergei Naryshkin, Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), in Havana. During the meeting, the Cuban leader noted the beginning of a new stage in bilateral contacts between the countries, which this year celebrate the 65th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations. Diaz-Canel also thanked the Russian Federation for its support in the struggle of the Cuban people against the blockade and the exclusion of the state from the list of countries allegedly supporting terrorism.
