Talks between Thailand and Cambodia on a ceasefire have begun in Malaysia.
Negotiations between the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, Phum Tham Vechayachai, and the head of the Government of Cambodia, Hun Manet, on a cease-fire began in Malaysia. This was reported by The Star newspaper on July 28.
The meeting is being mediated by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
"The purpose of the meeting is to reduce tension on the border between the two ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) neighboring countries. — Ed.)," the publication says.
According to the publication, officials from the United States and China are also present at the talks. It is noted that Washington and Beijing are calling for restraint and a diplomatic settlement of the conflict.
On July 27, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed support for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire with Thailand amid an armed conflict on the border between the two countries. According to him, US President Donald Trump expressed concern about the increase in violence and said that "he does not want to see wars and battles that will lead to numerous casualties among soldiers and civilians."
Before that, on July 25, the Reuters news agency reported that the escalation of the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia could lead to the outbreak of war. New clashes between the sides were also reported. At least 15 people died as a result of the mutual attacks.
