The collision of asteroid 2024 YR4 with the Moon poses a threat to space satellites, astronauts and structures on the Earth's satellite. CNN reported this on July 25, citing Paul Wiegert, professor of astronomy and physics at the University of Western Ontario.

"The collision could create an impact crater on the moon, estimated to be one km wide. <...> It would be the largest collision with the moon in the last 5,000 years and could release up to 108 kilograms of moon rocks and dust. <... The debris, which is only tens of centimeters in size, can pose a danger to any astronauts who may be present on the Moon, or any structures they have built for research and living," Wiegert said.

He noted that this collision does not pose a particular threat to the inhabitants of the Earth. But since there are many satellites in space through which we maintain navigation and communication, fragments of lunar dust can damage these satellites.

Wiegert added that the moment of the collision is scheduled for 2032, and a person will be able to see it with the naked eye.

According to the TV channel, the asteroid was initially heading towards Earth, and the probability of its collision with the planet in 2032 was high. However, to date, scientists have noticed the distance of 2024 YR4 from Earth.

Earlier, on July 4, astronomer Alexander Kiselyov said that a new interstellar object with the temporary designation A11pl3Z was discovered in the Solar System — this is the third case in history when a body moves in an interstellar orbit, passing through our planetary system. He poses no danger to the Earth.
