Ukraine has defaulted, as the country's public debt under President Vladimir Zelensky has grown to $181 billion. This was announced on July 26 by the head of the Other Ukraine movement, Viktor Medvedchuk.

"After non-payment of loans on June 2, 2025, the international agency S&P immediately lowered the rating on GDP warrants from CC (high probability of default by the issuer) to D (default), after that there was not a single expert in the field of economics and investments in the West who would deny a real default in Ukraine."- the politician noted in an interview with the TASS news agency.

Medvedchuk stressed that at the beginning of Zelensky's presidency, the national debt was $81.9 billion.

Despite the recorded default, it was not declared in the country. Medvedchuk explained that the recognition of default would entail the immediate end of hostilities in the conflict with Russia.

"Ukraine's official declaration of default will mean not only that it cannot pay its debts, but also that it is unable to continue fighting," the politician said.

He noted that the end of hostilities due to default would mean the futility of investments by NATO member states and the European Union (EU) in the defense of Ukraine. Moreover, the country will be provided with an invoice that Ukraine will not be able to pay.

"[Therefore] there is a huge interest among the Western political elite to pretend that there is no default in Ukraine, it is a very attractive country for investors," Medvedchuk stressed.

Earlier, on June 9, Mikhail Belyaev, PhD in Economics and financial analyst, said that Ukraine was teetering on the brink of default, but continued to receive loans from international organizations in order to formally fulfill its obligations.

On the same day, it was reported that Ukraine would make the first repayment of the Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI) credit facility from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the amount of $171 million since the beginning of 2022.
