A forest fire in Cyprus has destroyed more than 110 residential buildings
More than 110 residential buildings were destroyed as a result of a forest fire in Limassol, Cyprus. This was reported by the Phileleftheros newspaper on July 25.
"The number of houses destroyed in the Limassol fire has reached 114," the article says.
The fires also damaged the municipal infrastructure. Currently, work is underway to restore water supply and electricity in the affected areas.
According to the publication, the fire caused damage to seven architectural monuments, including the oldest churches, a medieval bridge and a watermill. According to the Eratosthenes Center of Excellence, about 125 square kilometers of land were burned out as a result of the fire.
Earlier, on July 1, Turkish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ibrahim Yumakli announced that 342 forest fires had been registered in the country. At the same time, six fires continued in Manisa, Izmir, Hatay and Antakya at that time. Later, on July 4, the Minister announced that six of the nine fires had been brought under control.
On the same day, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that law enforcement officials had detained 44 people on suspicion of involvement in the outbreak of forest fires in 12 provinces. It was clarified that 10 of them were arrested.
