Eight chicks were born to a swan couple in Kronstadt. This number of feathered babies is considered a record for this bird species, according to the Telegram channel "Every creature has a pair" on Friday, July 25.

Until a few years ago, scientists did not expect that swans would nest in St. Petersburg. However, the birds fell in love with the reed beds near the Kronstadt dam, writes 78.ru .

"These are hissing swans. They are easily distinguished from other relatives by their orange-red beak with a black outgrowth. It is the hissers that easily get along with humans, which is why this species is often kept as an ornament for gardens and parks," the publication says.

The birds have been breeding their chicks in Kronstadt for the ninth year. According to ornithologists, there are from five to eight eggs in a clutch of hissing swans, that is, they are currently raising the maximum number of chicks.

Earlier in July, it was reported that in the Moscow region, in the area of deforestation for a quarry, locals noticed a pair of gray cranes listed in the Red Book of the region. There are only 150-170 pairs of these birds in the region.
