The number of people infected with chikungunya fever in southern China has increased to more than 3 thousand people. This was reported by local media outlet Stdaily on Thursday, July 24.

The first case of this fever in China was detected on July 8 in the city of Foshan, Guangdong Province. As of July 22, the number of confirmed cases exceeded 3,000.

"The Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention stated that there are currently imported cases from abroad in Beijing from time to time, and with the increasing frequency of international exchanges, the risk of imported cases continues to exist," the publication said.

The disease is transmitted through mosquito bites. Chief Researcher and deputy director of the Department of Infectious Disease Prevention and Control at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in He Jianfeng Province noted that the mosquito species that has mainly become a vector multiplies in standing water, and therefore, to ensure safety, it is better not to approach standing water, as well as use mosquito nets and wear clothes with long sleeve outdoors.

"If a person has a high fever, severe joint pain, or a rash, especially if they have a history of mosquito bites or have traveled to epidemic areas, they should immediately seek medical help," said Duan Leilei, a researcher at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Earlier, on July 20, Rospotrebnadzor reported that no imported cases of chikungunya fever had been recorded in Russia. In Russia, according to Rospotrebnadzor, there are no conditions for the formation of a local circulation of the pathogen among mosquitoes.

On May 26, the Russian Embassy reported that Sri Lanka had recorded the largest outbreak of chikungunya fever in 20 years. The disease is transmitted through the bites of yellow-horned mosquitoes, which are most active during the daytime. The symptoms of infection appear within 2-12 days after infection and include severe joint pain, fever, and skin rash.
