- The mayor's office of Sderot announced mental disorders in children after the Hamas attack
Most of the children in Sderot, an Israeli city located in close proximity to the border with the Gaza Strip, suffer from severe psychoemotional disorders that arose after the attack by the radical Palestinian group Hamas on October 7. Eduard Amirgolov, adviser to the head of the municipality, told Izvestia about this on July 24.
According to him, the consequences of the attack are especially acute among minors, among whom the number of referrals to psychiatrists is rapidly growing.
"I have five children. All five of them go to a psychiatrist and take medications. The eldest is 18, he has a 50% disability. The six—year-old starts having breakdowns - he throws the remote control at the TV screen. These are 60% of the city's population," the official said, giving an example from his personal life.
As Amirgolov explained, schoolchildren have difficulty learning: they get tired quickly and have difficulty concentrating on their studies. The situation is aggravated by the ongoing rocket attacks, which disrupt sleep and create a constant sense of anxiety.
"We fall asleep to gunfire, the house is shaking. At 06:00, the children go to school tired. It's impossible to live like this," Amirgolov said.
About 30 thousand people live in Sderot, a city 8 km from the border. Every second minor here suffers from anxiety.
Earlier, on July 23, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) press service reported that Israel had intensified fighting in Gaza City. It clarifies that Israeli troops continue to operate in the northern part of the enclave, identifying and destroying the ground and underground infrastructure of the Palestinian Hamas movement.
On July 21, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the ongoing violence in the Gaza Strip, including the shelling of people trying to get food for their families at humanitarian aid points.
