On July 23, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan proposed to adopt a simplified charter of the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC) in order to be able to deprive the current Catholicos Garegin II (known in the world as Ktrij Nersisyan) of his post and elect a new one.

"The election of a new Catholicos will not take place until on the basis of the "Armenian Charter" (the charter of the Armenian Apostolic Church). The charter, written in modern Armenian, which will be a short and understandable document for everyone, will not be approved," he wrote on his Facebook page (owned by Meta, a company recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

According to the politician, there is currently not a single version of the charter in modern Armenian, it includes thousands of canons that have been formed over the course of 17 centuries.

"After the charter is approved, elections of the Catholicos of All Armenians should be held, during which the piety of all candidates will be verified," the Prime Minister said.

Earlier, on July 20, Pashinyan called for preparations to expel Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II from his residence in Etchmiadzin. Pashinyan accused Nersisyan of violating the marriage covenant.

In turn, the Zartonk party has submitted two applications against the Prime Minister to the Prosecutor General's Office of Armenia. According to the party, Pashinyan's actions "violate articles of the Constitution," as he openly instructed the judiciary to make arrests, carry out criminal prosecution, and detain clergy.
