Belarusian citizens permanently residing in Russia now have the right to participate in local government elections. The relevant law was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 23, and the document was published on the official Internet portal of legal information.

According to the law, Belarusians who permanently reside in the territory of the Russian Federation can now elect themselves or be elected to Russian local governments. Russians who also permanently reside in Belarus have a similar right.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a press conference following talks with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko on March 13 that citizens of both countries had equal rights to participate in local elections. He clarified that this right is enshrined in the protocol on amendments to the treaty of 1998. The Russian President noted that the opportunities for more active involvement of citizens in political life are expanding.
