The Lebanese Hezbollah movement has refused to lay down its arms even in the event of a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanese territory. This was reported on July 23 by Al Arabiya TV channel, citing sources.

Hezbollah informed [National Army chief and Parliament Speaker Nabih] Berri that it would not surrender its weapons even if Israel withdrew, stressing that it was ready for a clash if the Lebanese state wanted to do so," the material says.

In addition, the movement stressed that "none of the leadership has the authority to make a decision on the transfer of weapons." Hezbollah's leaders do not intend to comply with this requirement, even in the case of commitments from other participants in the political process, and are ready to escalate relations with the government in the event of attempts to forcibly disarm, Al Arabiya said.

It is noted that the position of Hezbollah is causing discontent in the Lebanese cabinet, as it is at odds with the course of President Joseph Aoun and the government to limit the movement's weapons.

U.S. Special Envoy Thomas Barak arrived in Beirut on July 7 to receive a response from the Lebanese authorities to Washington's proposal to disarm Hezbollah in late June.

The next day, Marwan Abdullah, head of the foreign relations department of the Kataib parliamentary party, said that the response of the Lebanese authorities to the US proposal would be a step towards ending the war and disarming all non-state formations.
